CHAPTER 5

LIVING ALCOHOL FREE (FOR A LITTLE OR A LONG TIME)

The Big D

MAKE ONE NEW DECISION

WHEN YOU BREAK IT DOWN, living alcohol-free is just about one small decision. Making one decision after another to find another way to pass the time, wind down after work or celebrate, other than what you have done in the past. Each decision you make to find a new reward, will help rewire that habit loop. Each decision you make to stay alcohol-free, makes the next decision to live alcohol-free and teeny tiny bit easier. Imagine your decision to live alcohol-free is a muscle, each time you use it, it gets a little bigger and stronger, and gradually saying “no thanks” becomes easier.

This is not about willpower or never ever drinking again. This is about you making a good choice. The best way to set yourself for a win, is to do it gradually. So, you can return the megaphone, the PA system and the planned announcement at your Team Meet this week. You don’t need to preach just yet. You just need to do this thing until you are comfortable.

Do: tell a couple of trusted friends.

Don’t: update your Facebook status, tweet it or put a ‘No Drinking Ever’ post on your Instagram.

This is a very personal journey - and although our first instinct is to announce our opinions, latest adventures, achievements, thoughts and questions on social media for anyone and everyone to read - this is not about anyone else. This is about you. My advice? Keep this on the down-low for now. Sure, tell a couple, maybe even just one, trusted, supportive friend. And when you are thinking of which friend that may be, make a note of the ones who will be upset and inconvenienced if you tell them that you’re not going to drink. Now read the next part out loud - That person might not really be your friend. And if that’s your spouse, then ok, you may have to address that at some point. We can deal with other people later in the book. This is all about you remember.

If one of your close friends is not able to see through their selfish need to see you get wasted at her hen’s party, or his 30th, or her wedding, or his Dad’s funeral, then no wonder you have ended up here. Surrounding yourself with people who will respect you for your decision to sort yourself out, and support you on your journey, is imperative. I do hope that you are able to confide in someone close to you, and be honest about why you are taking some time away from slamming down tequila. Your inner Woo-girl and best shot at being best man on ground is going into a hibernation of sorts, to emerge as a more stable, functional and happy person. Your friend, a true friend, would want to support you on that journey and may even partner with you. That’s friendship.

I told my Mum, we are super close.
